- To motivate children to lead healthy and active lives by: Developing a positive attitude towards, and interest in, a wide range of physical activities; Raising awareness of health-related fitness and its lifelong benefits; Supporting children in maintaining positive mental health and wellbeing.
- To support and nurture physical development of each child: size, strength, fitness, speed, gross and fine motor skills
- To develop cognitive understanding in PE, and provide opportunities that enable children to acquire knowledge, tactics and decision making skills.
- To build confidence and self-esteem in all children, fostering skills such as teamwork, leadership, resilience and respect.
- To deliver enjoyable experiences, where positive attitudes of sensitivity, co-operation, competition and tolerance may develop.
- To provide children the access to participate in competitive sport, both in and outside of school.
- To provide two hours of high quality PE per week during the school day, as recommended by the DFE
Implementation
We deliver out intent through:
- A well-structured, progressive PE curriculum that develops skills, knowledge, and understanding across a broad range of physical activities and sports.
- Inclusive lessons, adapted to ensure that all pupils can access learning and achieve success, regardless of ability or need.
- Opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day, not limited to PE lessons, but also through active playtimes, extra-curricular clubs, and whole-school events.
- Regular opportunities for competition at varying levels, including within school and through partnership events
- Clear teaching of safe practice, with pupils encouraged to take responsibility for equipment use, space, and their own wellbeing.
- Cross-curricular links, ensuring children recognise the relationship between physical activity, health, and learning.
- Strong partnerships with families, local clubs, and community organisations to extend opportunities for participation and achievement.
Impact:
The impact of our PE curriculum is as follows:
- All pupils participate regularly in PE lessons and extra-curricular activities, demonstrating enjoyment, enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards being active.
- Children can explain the benefits of physical activity for health, fitness, and mental wellbeing.
- Pupils show measurable progression in fundamental movement skills (agility, balance, coordination) and sport-specific skills, evidenced through assessments and observation.
- By the end of Key Stage 2, all children can swim 25m and have basic water skills
- By the end of Key Stage 2, children can confidently apply tactical awareness and decision-making skills within competitive and cooperative games.
- Pupils develop self-confidence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills, applying them both in PE and across wider school life.
- Every child has the opportunity to take part in competitive sport, celebrating achievement at personal, team, and school level.
- By the end of KS2, children are prepared for the next step of their education for school PE, with the physical skills, knowledge, and positive mindset needed to continue an active lifestyle.
Grassroots
We also work closely with Grassroots, a specialist sports provider, to deliver high-quality PE lessons. Every class receives at least one hour of PE each week, taught by fully qualified, safeguarding-checked coaches who understand how to engage primary-aged children.
Teachers work alongside Grassroot coaches, observing and team-teaching lessons to build their confidence in delivering PE. 5 Sport also shares lesson ideas, progressions, and assessment tools to make sure PE is fun, inclusive, and challenging for all.

Pennine Sports Partnership
We are proud to be part of the Pennine Sports Partnership (PSP). Through this partnership, our pupils enjoy taking part in a wide range of exciting sporting events such as the Mini Olympics, Netball tournaments and Boccia competitions. These opportunities encourage children to try new activities, challenge themselves, and most importantly, have fun!
PSP also supports our school by:
-
Providing training and development for staff and pupils (including Play Leader training).
-
Supplying resources such as baseline assessments to track progress in PE.
-
Offering innovative activities like Active Maths and Active Reading, helping pupils to combine learning with movement across the curriculum.
