Terrific topics
Here are some of the exciting things we get up to in Class One. Please see the Curriculum Maps below for an overview of what children in Class 1 have been learning.
Printing artwork
We've had a great time exploring different textures to create prints by gathering rubbings from our environment and using objects around the classroom to create a repeated printing patterns. After we loved creating foam prints, using foam, ink and brayers. We think they look fantastic!
PIRATE DAY AT WILBERLEE
Class One had an amazing time on pirate day. They were joined by the Class one children from Clough Head and Wellhouse and we all celebrated National 'Talk like a PIrate Day' together.
The children took part in lots of different activities including, making parrots, completing a pirate scavenger hunt, following clues to find the treasure and playing pirate games.
ARGH Grog anyone!
We had a fantastic time making and tasting 'Pirate Grog!'
Lots of us liked it,saying it was 'zingy and lemony', but some of us are really happy we weren't pirates trying to stay healthy
Autumn and Harvest
Today we had great fun designing and carving pumpkins as part of our Autumn topic. We discussed why we harvest the pumpkins in Autumn and how part of Halloween is celebrated by carving spooky faces into them. Together we talked about keeping safe whilst using sharps knives and always asking an adult to help us.
They turned out ‘Pumpkin perfect’
Amazing Animals
This week we have been reading Dear Zoo. We made a story map and learnt to sign the story. Here is a video of us telling the story.
Winter
We love exploring new stories, which includes our Elmer in the snow story. We chatted about the pictures and how it felt to play in the snow, using water colours and salt we created a snowy background and added our own Elmers to them. Whilst painting we came up with lots of adjectives that described our own paintings and the pictures in the story. Later we used our knowledge of primary colours mixing them to create secondary colours, which we used to paint Elmer masks.
Check out our amazing Winter display board with all this fab Elmer in the snow inspired work.
What makes a superhero
We've started to look at what makes a superhero and how we can be superheroes and we're loving it!
Capes and masks are a definite for a superhero as does super powers like sticking to walls, running fast and fireing webs.
But do all superheroes need capes? We think that helping anybody in need is a superhero too. So secretly we're all superheroes and have extra special friendly powers.
People who help us
We have had a great time exploring and discovering the different people and animals who help us.
We had an amazing Federation Class 1 Day when all three Class One's visited Clough Head School. We all dressed up as people who help us in our community and had even had some very exciting visitors who told us all about their jobs.
Margret and Teddy visited from the Guide dogs society.
Margret and Teddy visited from the Guide dogs society. We learnt lots about Teddy's training and how he will help people who can't see. Teddy still has another year before he graduates to a full service dog.
Jenny and her hearing dog Xander.
Jenny has very little hearing and without her super hearing dog, Xander, she would struggle greatly with her everyday life. Xander uses his skills to alert Jenny when visitors come to their house, when Jenny's morning alarm goes off or when the firealarm sounds. Without Xander Jenny wouldn't hear any of these things.
So its not just people who help us but animals too!
Arctic Adventures
We had a fantastic time kick starting our topic with an expedition to the North Pole. We thought carefully about what we would need to keep us safe and warm on our expedition. This involved packing an expedition bag with essentials, such as sleeping bags, food, water, torches, walkie talkie's and warm clothes. We loaded it onto an emergency sledge before putting on our own winter clothes and boots, and heading out on to the ice sheet. We didn't want to get lost in the blizards so we all hung on to the rope and followed our leader. It was exhausting walking against the bitter wind and crossing the huge crevasses, we even needed our walking poles and ice axes. Finally after a long trek, we arrived at the North Pole for our celebratory photograph, before heading back across the bleak land to our base camp......Class One!
Ice art
Winter is a great time for exploring ice and how it is formed. We had a great time lookng at and using ice sculptures to inspire our own Ice Art! First we went out onto the field and collected lots of small objects that would add colour and texture to our art. We then took time to arrange them on plastic lids before filling them with water and adding a string hanger. The water and objects would freeze outside on a very cold night, so we left them out over night in the playground. In the morning we checked to see if they had frozen. some of them had nearly frozen solid but not all so we popped them in the freezer to finish off.
We loved seeing our art work hnaging in the trees, even though we had to brave the cold blizardy weather outside!
